Technically, Windows CE 6.x is a discontinued operating system developed by Microsoft for mobile devices before the emergence of Windows Phone and then Windows Phone 8.x, but it's still used in some industries and regional markets. Windows CE (originally called 'Windows Embedded Compact') was introduced in 2000 and is designed to be embedded into other devices like mobile phones, cars etc. It's actually a scaled down version of the Windows NT kernel to make it fit-in perfectly with lower powered device computers with little memory.. The earlier versions also lacked graphical interface (GUI) and were primarily command line based interfaces such as FDISK, COPY CON etc... Windows CE versions are typically updated every year during the Mobile World Congress. Version 6.x is used only in devices from Microsoft, such as those from Blackberry, Nokia and ZTE. There are a few other manufacturers that operate on its platform as well. The major advantage of Windows CE is that it does not need much memory to run. So, it's beneficial for devices with small storage capacity, low bandwidth devices etc. It also supports 3G-4G services. Windows Mobile 6.x implements much of the Windows Phone 7 API, but still offers support for older Windows Mobile 5/6 apps. Windows Mobile 6.x is very much backwards compatible with legacy applications developed for previous versions, including the classic windows CE .Net MS .Net Compact Framework 3. 0, MobileJazz .Net Compact Framework 3.0 etc... Windows Phone 7 was released in 2010 and the new version is much different from Windows CE 6.x. All applications are now written using the latest .net languages, which will assign much more high-tech capabilities to the devices. It also features a full-blown GUI interface with touch support which is much different from Windows CE's command line interface. Windows Phone 7 has built-in networking capability, camera capturing capabilities etc... Version 8 is referred as "Windows Embedded Compact 2013". It was announced at the International CES 2013, and it is based on Windows 8. Like other Windows CE operating systems, it doesn't need high processing power, as the internal components will be able to run it efficiently.Windows CE was used to develop a range of devices from car dashboard computers to mobile phones. Microsoft have won several contracts with other manufacturers through its usage of the platform. The directory below shows a range of devices which used or still use Windows CE as their operating system for a particular device: Windows Mobile 6.x (codenamed "Tango") is based on Windows Phone 7 development platform (codenamed "Tango"). cfa1e77820
